You know you're in Texas when...

the water smells and tastes like algae! This has got to be one of the worst things about Texas so far (of course beside being away from all things familiar!). Apparently when things heat up in summer algae grows in the lake. Somehow the smell and taste of the algae is in ALL water. When you turn on the kitchen sink or the shower you can immediately smell it. I can't even use tap water to swallow a pill without gagging. It is SO nasty. The water that's purified is just fine at least. And I thought Vegas water was gross? Not anymore!
To be fair, I think this wonderful phenomenon is more specific to the area we live in. I don't think it's a statewide thing.

Lake Time!

We have been spending a lot of our time in the water. Just like Vegas, it is HOTT in Texas. The humidity is an entirely different torture to get used to. We decided we could sweat all day in our clothes or throw on a bathing suit and be in the water as often as possible. You'll see in the following posts just how much we try to live in the water.

My cousin and her husband have 2 wave runners and love to go the lake. The lake they go to is about 20 minutes away and they go all of the time. We were lucky enough to tag along one day and had a blast. The lakes are nothing like what we are used to. There are no sandy beaches. It is grass right up to the water with trees everywhere. The nice thing is there are covered picnic tables everywhere just like at the park.

We packed a lunch and spent the day riding the waverunners, swimming, tubing, knee-boarding, skiing, etc. It was a blast. I think I had so much fun because it felt like home. Right now so many things feel unfamiliar that any sense of familiarity is so comforting. Vance loved the water. When he decided he wanted a break, he just played on the grass with his toys and ate snacks. We're hoping we will get to tag along for many more lake trips in the future!

Finally gave in to the Twilight madness

After holding out for a pretty long time, I finally read the Twilight series. It wasn't that I was against reading them, but I don't read for leisure when I'm in school. I have read more than enough textbooks the last four years and now that I'm graduated I read a book for fun. My sister gave me the book as a going-away gift and told me I HAD to read it, so being the obedient sister I am I decided to give it a shot. The verdict?

I really liked them. I didn't love them, but for a quick easy read I really enjoyed it. I think I read all four books in a matter of 8 or 9 days. It was hard to put them down. I'm feeling slightly sleep deprived. My least favorite book was New Moon and my favorite was Eclipse. I love Jacob, but I am still an Edward fan. Jacob and Bella were never meant to be together that way. I do think the fourth book got a little crazy but I still enjoyed it.

I actually kind of liked reading the books after the movie. That way I pictured the characters as they were portrayed in the movie. The only character I feel wasn't casted right was Rosalie. She just wasn't beautiful enough. The other characters I thought were fine. As I read the book I could easily picture them - even crazy looking Jasper.

It felt so great to read for fun. Now that I've fulfilled my commitment to Jennie I need some suggestions for other great books.

Please let me know what books you have read that you have absolutely loved!!! The only genre I don't like is fantasy/sci-fi. I prefer a good suspense or romance but will take all suggestions!

Our 1st TX storm

As soon as we moved here everyone kept telling us how awful the thunderstorms are. I love the rain and thunder and lightning so I couldn't wait to experience our first one. It was unlike any storm I had seen before. One minute everything was fine. The sun was out and not really too much wind. In a matter of about 15 minutes it was a different story.

The clouds got really low and super thick. The sunlight was immediately gone and a crazy wind began. It was blowing so hard!!! You could literally look up at the clouds and see them move. The lightning lit up the entire sky and the thunder was booming. I loved it, but all the kids were worried. Every one in the neighborhood was moving their cars in the garage (to protect their cars in case of a hail storm).

Before we knew it the tornado sirens were going off and the power went out. We lit candles and headed to the pantry with all of the kids. My cousin took out her hand-crank radio and we waited until the tornado alert was over.

It actually didn't freak me out at all (I can't say the same about the kids), but I was glad to be with my cousin who knew what to do. The worst part of the storm ended after about 45 minutes but the power was out for almost 4 hours. You forget how much we use power!

All in all it was a pretty cool experience! ps - check out the video below to see how fast the clouds were moving - crazy!!! Turn on your volume to hear the roar of the thunder.

Ouch!

With as clumsy as my sweet son is it's amazing he hasn't had a bad injury yet. Sure we have had plenty of bumps and bruises but nothing very serious. The other day we were at our friend's house when Vance was dive-bombing onto the pillows on the floor. Well his aim was a little off and he ended up diving into this wrought iron decoration and sliced his lip. It was bleeding pretty good for awhile. He actually handled it pretty well considering how deep it was. Unfortunately this hasn't slowed him down at all!

You know you're in Texas...

when you see dead armadillos on the side of the road! When Chad arrived in Texas (he drove, I flew) he told me about the armadillos he saw. At first I totally thought he was joking, but then my cousin told me he was telling the truth. So that sparked the beginning of a new blogging theme. Every time I discover something I feel is really unique to Texas I will post about it by finishing the sentence, "You know you're in Texas..."

Stay tuned for more from the Waldron adventures. j/k How nerdy does that sound?

Happy birthday Savannah

Right now we are staying with my cousin Amy and her husband Corey. Amy and Corey have six kids: Conner (13), Savannah (12), Tessa (10), Macey (6), Charlie (4), and Cael (2). Savannah had her 12th birthday on the 6th so we were here to celebrate with her. Notice above the candle in the ice cream. Amy wasn't feeling the whole making the cake thing so she went ghetto style with just the ice cream.
Savannah wanted to go shopping for her birthday - that's my kind of girl! I actually appreciated the shopping because I needed a little retail therapy. I was feeling a little blue about the whole move but after a couple of hours of shopping I felt much better!

Happy birthday Savannah and thanks for letting us celebrate with you.

Sprinkler fun

The other day at my mom's house Vance was playing outside when I heard the sprinklers turn on. I expected him to freak out so I rushed out there to bring him inside. This is what I found:I started cracking up. He was excited I could just feel the adrenaline rushing through his body. He had found a plastic spoon and was playing right by the sprinkler head. The water was pretty cold but it didn't seem to bother him at all.
As a mom I feel like I always forget the free entertainment at the house. We'll be doing this many more times throughout the summer.

Congrats Carleen & Jon

Chad's sister got married May 30th to Jon Ivie. Saturday was a crazy day for us because it was the same day as my grandma's funeral. This was our schedule:

6:45 - wake up and get ready in pink clothes
8:15 - drop Vance off at the babysitters
8:50 - start playing piano for viewing
9:00 - viewing
10:00 - funeral
12:00 - graveside service
2:00 - funeral luncheon
3:00 - change into green clothes for the wedding and leave for temple
4:00 - sealing at the temple
4:30 - wedding pictures
6:00 - party with my mom's family
7:00 - wedding reception
9:00 - back to the party with my mom's family

Enough complaining - back to the wedding. Carleen looked beautiful and they couldn't have been happier. I wish I would have gotten some pictures at the reception but Vance was tired and cranky (I can't imagine why) so I had my hands full.

This is Chad with all of his brothers. Brent leaves on his mission, we moved, and Zach will be turning in his mission papers before too long so they wanted to get a picture of all the boys. I think they are all pretty good looking.

Trisha and I found the cutest matching shirts for Ty and Vance. They looked pretty official with their button up shirts and black slacks. So handsome! Chad's mom really wanted a picture with all of her grandkids. They are all at hard ages for pictures so this is really the best we could do.
By the end of all the pictures Vance was really ready to be done. Notice in the picture the happy look in his face and that darling sparkle in his eyes? Yeah probably not because it definitely wasn't yet. He was SO over all of it.
Congratulations Jon and Carleen!

A series of goodbyes

Before we left it feels like we had a straight week's worth of goodbye lunches, dinners, desserts, etc. Below you will find a summary of the many celebrations! I had lunch with all of the girls in my boss's family. I have come to love these girls. Anita, the wife, is always taking care of me. She has provided me with 72-hour kits, food storage, and lots of delicious baking. Linzie, in the pink shirt, is my comic relief. She reminds of all of the trivial things you care about in high school. I love her! Paige, the youngest girl, is always cooking for me and Vance. On track break she opens up a restaurant, brings in a menu, and you can get a gourmet lunch for $1. BreighAn, in the blue shirt, is hilarious. She always asks the most hilarious questions and gets confused with the simplest of directions.
We had a going away party of the 29th. We got to see so many of our friends. It was super mellow which is just what I wanted. I tried at the beginning to get pictures with everyone, but quickly realized that wasn't going to happen so here is a list of everyone I remembered that came (for journaling purposes): Allreds, Bagleys, Bowmans, Andersons, Wilcocks, Mathewsons, Terrys, Ogdens, Toni Ogden, Holts, Manns, Leedoms, Hinckleys, Borens, Petersens, Waldrons, Rivards, and Svedins. Thanks to everyone for coming!
Next up was dinner with my aunts, uncles, and grandparents on my dad's side. We went to PF Changs and ordered way too much food. I love spending time with my dad's family. We always spend the entire time laughing. They joked they were going to start a "return fund" so when we decide to come home they will pay for it. Thanks for the faith guys!

Of course I needed a girls' night before we left. We decided to do dessert and ended up at the restaurant for over 2 hours. What I love about these girls is how down to earth they are. I never have to put up a front - I can just be myself for better or worse. I made them promise they would remember I am friend #1 and Leslie is friend #2!
This is the beginning of the hard goodbyes. Chad and I love being with all the kids and we wanted to make a special effort to say goodbye to all of them. I have probably spent the most time with Amy's kids the past couple of years and we have made many memories. I hope they will remember at least a few of the fun things we have done.

So when Leslie told her boys we were moving the twins had a lot of questions. They were really worried we wouldn't even be able to talk anymore. Leslie reassured them we could talk on the phone and use a webcam which calmed their fears. Leslie also gave me a really cute kit to help me keep in touch.
Man we have gone to so many games for these little guys. Vance is always fascinated with everything Mason and Zach do. I am a little worried he may end up being a little bit of a monkey but it could be worse!

All of the adults in my immediate family went out ot Melting Pot for dessert to say our goodbyes. It was a really nice evening. I love Melting Pot because you can stay as along as you want without feeling rushed. We were able to laugh and joke for a couple of hours before the goodbyes started. I am going to missing these people more than anyone else!!! I have high hopes they will visit as often as they can.

The hardest goodbye of all was saying goodbye to my Mom at the airport. Literally about 3 minutes after this I looked back to see my Mom was gone and the tears started. I made it to the bathroom without looking like too much of an idiot. I took a couple minutes locked in the bathroom stall to pull myself together and prayed we were making a good decision.
We are now officially in Texas after an interesting flight with Vance! Good luck to us!
I love and miss you all!

Baking with Grandma Sutton

For our going away party I wanted to serve Texas sheet cake (Chad's idea which I thought was SO adorable) and no one makes a better Texas sheet cake than my Grandma Sutton. I called her up and asked if I could come over and she could help me make it.
Grandma told me the first step was to gather all of the ingredients and read through the recipe.
As I added the ingredients Grandma realized I really didn't know what I was doing. She basically held my hand through the rest of it all. I finally decided I was better at supporting Grandma in her efforts than actually doing the cooking. Aren't I pretty? Leslie stopped by to visit and Grandma put her to work because Leslie actually does bake. Once again I resorted to cheerleading and telling them what a great job they were doing frosting my cake!
I couldn't have been more pleased with the finished outcome. We had two yummy cakes and had a great afternoon with my grandparents.
We ended the afternoon with eating one of grandma's homemade cinnamon rolls. I seriously believe my grandma makes the BEST cinnamon rolls ever. She could easily put cinnabon out of business.

Love you Grandma and thanks for the help!

Grandma Anderson

My mom's mother passed away and her funeral was on Saturday, May 30. Grandma Fae Anderson was 88-years-old. She was very sick towards the end and was ready to go and see her family waiting for her on the other side of the veil. She had a husband, children, and siblings to greet her in heaven! She led a great life and accomplished many great things.

We were out of town camping when my mom called to say Grandma probably wasn't going to make it through the night. Chad, Jennie, and I loaded up the car as fast as we could and went home to be with my mom and grandma.

I was really glad I went home. It was a very special experience to share with my sister, mom, and aunts. I'm sure I will never forget it.

To watch my grandma struggle for each breath was heartbreaking. When she finally passed there was such a feeling of peace in the room. I can just picture her and Grandpa happily reuniting after almost 10 long years.

My mom and her sisters did a great job with the funeral. They put together a beautiful display of my grandma's life. The family didn't wear the traditional black funeral colors. Pink was BY FAR grandma's favorite color so everyone wore that color. Literally everything was pink. I'm sure Grandma was smiling down. It was great to see all of my mom's family. It is a really huge family that is spread out all over the United States. We don't see each other that often but when we do we all get along great.

Love you Grandma!

Memorial Day Weekend

This post is long overdue but I am trying my best to get caught up on all of this blogging.
For Memorial Day weekend we went to Yankee Meadows on Cedar Mountain with my dad's family and a couple of friends. It was nice to get away for a little bit. We didn't do anything out of the ordinary - camp fires, walks, four-wheeling, etc. but everyone had a good time.
The kids found the best places to make forts and so we didn't ever really see them. They actually did a pretty good job. Chad helped the boys with their fort. He started with a bathroom. The boys would bring him the sticks and he would place them were he wanted them. When they finished the ceiling they found a log for the toilet. The boys immediately gathered around the log and began to pee (see picture below) - charming right?
Rob helped the girls with their fort and it turned way cooler than the boys. Rob must have spent all day building this thing, but the girls loved it. They had a sink, a family room, a bathroom, and bedroom. The girls in the picture are Kelsie, Briton, Aspen, and Riley.
Vance kept himself occupied by playing in the brown dirt and pushing his Tonka trucks down the four-wheeler trailer. After awhile Colton thought that looked like a fun game too. The two of them played on that trailer for a seriously long time.

Vance was a filthy mess the whole weekend. At first I tried to keep him clean but it was way too much work. Eventually I decided that a little dirt never hurt a boy.

We had to cut the trip a little short to be with my mom and grandma - more to come on that soon.
